“We’re sorry. Yahoo! Photos is closing on September 20, 2007 so we are no longer accepting new accounts or allowing users to upload photos if you don’t already have photos in your account. We’ve decided to focus all our efforts on Flickr – the award winning photo sharing community that Time Magazine has even called “completely addictive”. Why not head over to Flickr for a look?”

The Wall Street Journal did a nice little write-up of the competitive landscape, but left out an important competitor.  The WSJ covers Kodak Gallery, Shutterfly, Snapfish, Flickr and Photobucket.  They also mention SmugMug and Webshots.  Conspicuously absent is the Google offering: Picasa Web Albums, http://picasaweb.google.com/.  I personally use Picasa Web because 1GB of free space is attractive.

Y! is providing tools to migrate your pics to all of the sites reviewed by the WSJ.  If you want help moving your images over from Y! to a site that isn’t supported by Y! and you’re using Windows, check out the tool that’s not related to Flickr: Migratr – http://www.callingshotgun.net/category/migratr/  It handles migrations between Flickr, Picasa Web, 23HQ, and SmugMug.  In theory, you could migrate from Y! to Flickr using the Y! tool, then to one of these other sites using Migratr.  Here’s a good little review of Migratr: http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-9751932-12.html (BTW, if you’re not using windows, find another tool that works and post a comment here with information about it!)

While you’re dealing with all of this picture stuff, you should check out: http://www.shozu.com/portal/  It’s a handy cellphone app that simplifies uploading phone images to the picture hosting site of your choice.  It currently supports the following sites (which might also serve as options to move your Y! Photos images to!):
blip.tv Buzznet Facebook Faces Flickr
Google Blogger HotSMS Kodak EasyShare Gallery life.Dada.Net LiveJournal
moblogUK Picasa Web Albums Pikeo Qipit Scoopt
